Malawian coach, Tom Saintfiet, plans on carrying out a radical overhaul of his side before next month’s World Cup qualifier against the Super Eagles, insisting that he is looking for “ambitious players” capable of helping the Flames qualify for next year’s tournament in Brazil.
The Belgian made the disclosure following his side’s disappointing performance against Angola in the Zambian capital, Lusaka, on Tuesday.
The Flames lost 3-2 to the Angolans to crash out of the Cosafa Castle Cup tournament, and the 40-year-old coach was angry at the lacklustre display.
“l want to bring in players who match the hunger for success ,” he said in Zambia after Malawi were sent packing from the regional tournament. “Football is about results.”
Saitnfiet said Malawi did not deserve to lose the match against Angola which they led and also dominated play.
“I am very disappointed,” he conceded in an interview with Malawi’s Nyasa Times, adding: “If you don’t score your opportunities and give goals away like this, you can’t win. It’s unacceptable to lose this match.”
The Belgian was appointed at the start of July on a two-month deal, tasked with steering the Flames past the Super Eagles in their final Group F qualifier on September 6.
The Malawians need a win against the Super Eagles to progress to the African zone World Cup play-offs, and Saintfiet believes the Cosafa tournament has given him a chance to see what to do when the team starts preparations for the big match against Nigeria.
“I am determined to succeed,” he said, adding: “Malawi can go to the World Cup.”
