Iniesta: Mourinho has ruined Spanish football

Jose Mourinho’s return to English football may have been heralded by most on these shores, but they are glad to see the back of him in Spain.

The Portuguese coach ended a three-year stint at Real Madrid to return to Chelsea last week having won two major trophies at the Bernabeu.

Arch rivals Barcelona have consistently got the better of Madrid in recent years and Mourinho was embroiled in a number of unsavoury rows with coaches and players at the Catalan club - who he once worked for as an interpreter under Sir Bobby Robson.

Barca won the La Liga title back from Madrid last month, and one of their star man has landed a parting shot at Mourinho.

Spain midfielder Andres Iniesta told El Pais: ‘You just have to look at the facts. Yes he damaged Spanish football, in general he did more harm than good.

‘But I don’t like talking about that person at all. So if you don’t mind we’ll leave it at that.’

Mourinho’s final season in Madrid ended without a trophy and was overshadowed by a row with captain Iker Casillas, who was omitted from the first-team despite his status as one of the world’s best goalkeepers.

The 50-year-old also endured a frosty relationship with the Spanish press, alienated a large section of Madrid’s supporters and divided the dressing room over the Casillas saga.
